Athletes train regularly and managing injuries become part of their life. Sometimes excess training and practice can lead to groin injury. Groin injury is most common among professional and recreational athletes especially while doing sudden jumping or twisting. The symptoms of groin injury are- pain in inner thighs, swelling or bruising, difficulty in walking or a snapping sound when the injury occurs. These injuries can include- stress fractures like a hairline break in the femur or pubic bone, bursitis of the hip which includes inflammation of the fluid in the hip joint or a hip sprain which is caused by inflammation or injury to tendons or muscles of the hip. There are three grades of groin strain:

  • Grade 1 groin strain happens when a muscle is overstrained. A person can walk but there is some pain while running, jumping, kicking or stretching. There is some pain and tenderness, but the stretch or muscle tear is minor.
  • Grade 2 causes pain, tenderness, weakness, and sometimes bruising. There is some difficulty in walking.
  • Grade 3 is a severe tear of the muscle, causing bruising and a lot of pain. There is often inflammation and a gap may be felt while palpating the injury.

 

To minimize the groin injury it is extremely important to make sure that the athlete has adequate rest. If a groin injury is suspected it may be appropriate to apply ice compressions repeatedly to the injured area. Consult a doctor or a physiotherapist immediately to get a diagnosis of the severity of the injury. The physiotherapist can suggest physical stretches, a massage or an electro-therapy if needed. The physiotherapist will recommend heat and stretching as part of the recovery program.
