Best compression leggings for lipedema: what to look for

Lipedema (spelt lipoedema in Australia and the UK) is a chronic condition in which fat builds up symmetrically in the legs and hips, and sometimes the arms, while the feet and hands are usually spared. The tissue is often tender, bruises easily and feels heavy by the end of the day. It almost always affects women.

Compression is one of the main tools women use to manage how lipedema feels day to day. But "compression leggings" covers everything from gym tights to prescription garments. This guide explains what to look for so you can compare options with confidence. It is general information, not medical advice, so please work with your doctor or lymphedema therapist on your own plan.

What can compression leggings do for lipedema?

Compression does not remove lipedema fat. What many women find is that firm, graduated compression makes their legs feel lighter and less achy, supports tender tissue, and makes it easier to stay active, which is an important part of looking after yourself with lipedema. Compression usually sits alongside other care such as movement, skin care and therapy.

What should I look for in compression leggings for lipedema?

1. Coverage where lipedema actually is

Lipedema typically affects the hips, thighs and lower legs, and sometimes the tummy. Knee-high socks or calf sleeves leave most of that untouched. Look for leggings that compress from the waist down to the ankle, with zones over the hips, thighs and abdomen as well as the calves.

2. Graduated, medical-grade compression

Compression is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Everyday activewear rarely states a level. Graduated compression is firmest at the ankle and eases off up the leg. Supacore lipedema leggings deliver graduated compression of 25+ mmHg, as stated on the product page. Your clinician can tell you whether that level suits your stage.

3. A seamless knit that is kind to tender skin

Lipedema tissue can be painful to touch. Seams and stiff edges can dig in, especially over the knees and hips. Seamless, circular-knit leggings are smoother against the skin and easier to wear for long days.

4. A waistband that stays put

A waistband that rolls down stops compressing the tummy and hips and can create a tight band where you least want one. Supacore leggings use the patented CORETECH® waistband, which also gives pelvic and lower-back support. Extra-high waisted styles such as Meryl add more coverage over the abdomen.

5. Medical device status

Supacore's CORETECH® garments are registered with the TGA, Australia's medical device regulator. That tells you the garment is made and described as a medical compression product, not just activewear.

6. A fit you can wear all day

The most effective leggings are the ones you actually wear. Think about breathability, colour, length (full length or 7/8) and whether you want a pocket.

Flat-knit or circular-knit compression?

You will often see flat-knit garments recommended for lipedema. Flat-knit fabric is firmer and is commonly prescribed for later stages or when lymphedema is also present. Circular-knit garments, like Supacore's, are seamless and smoother. They are often used in earlier stages, for everyday wear and for exercise. Neither is "better" for everyone. Your lymphedema therapist can advise which suits your stage and how you live.

Can I wear compression leggings all day?

Many women wear their leggings through the working day and while exercising. Put them on in the morning, when legs are usually least swollen. If you notice numbness, tingling, skin changes, or pain that gets worse while wearing them, take them off and speak to your clinician.

Which Supacore leggings suit lipedema?

See the full lipedema compression collection. Many women with lipedema also live with POTS or hypermobility; if that is you, our POTS collection may also help.

How do I get the right size?

Supacore leggings are sized by height and weight, not your usual clothing size. Use the women's size guide, and if you are between sizes, choose the smaller size. Firm leggings take a little technique: sit down, gather each leg like a stocking, roll it up from the foot, and ease the waistband up last.

Circular knit vs flat knit for lipedema: a practical comparison

Clinics and charities often talk about flat-knit versus circular-knit compression. Here is a plain comparison so you can discuss options with your clinician. Neither type is automatically right for every stage of lipedema (or lipoedema).

Feature Circular knit Flat knit
How it is made Knitted in a tube on a circular machine, usually seamless. Knitted as a flat panel and sewn with a seam; often custom-measured.
Feel and stiffness Smoother and more stretchy. Easier for many women to put on and wear for long days or exercise. Firmer and less stretchy. Holds its shape strongly, which some therapists prefer when more containment is needed.
When it may suit Earlier stages, everyday wear, work and exercise, when a seamless feel matters for tender skin. Later stages, when lipedema sits with lymphedema, or when a clinician has prescribed a firmer, custom garment.
Limitations May not give enough containment for every later-stage or complex case. Follow your therapist if they prescribe flat knit. Can be harder to don, warmer, and more expensive. Seams may irritate very tender skin for some people.
Supacore's approach Supacore lipedema leggings are circular-knit, seamless medical-grade garments at 25+ mmHg (as stated on the product page), with body-mapped zones over the abdomen, hips, thighs and legs, plus the CORETECH® waistband for pelvic support. They are made for day-to-day wear and activity. They are not a flat-knit custom prescription garment. Ask your doctor or lymphedema therapist which construction suits your stage.

Lipedema and lipoedema: spelling, Australia and where to shop

Lipedema is the usual US spelling. Lipoedema is the usual Australian and British spelling. They name the same condition: abnormal, often painful fat distribution in the legs and hips (and sometimes the arms).

Supacore CORETECH® garments are registered with the TGA. Many Australian customers ask about a private health fund rebate; eligibility depends on your fund and extras cover.

Wearing compression all day: care and when to remove

Beyond the all-day notes above, a few practical points help most women stick with compression:

  • Morning on, evening off (typical). Put leggings on when your legs are least swollen. Many women wear them through work and exercise, then remove them for sleep unless a clinician has advised otherwise.
  • Care. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, and line dry in the shade. Avoid bleach, tumble drying, ironing and fabric softener so the elastic keeps its strength.
  • Sizing. Supacore is sized by height and weight. If you are between sizes, size down (choose the smaller size) for a firm medical-grade fit.
  • Stop and check. Remove the garment and speak to your clinician if you get numbness, tingling, skin colour changes, open skin, or pain that worsens while wearing it.

Frequently asked questions

What compression level do I need for lipedema leggings?

There is no single right level. It depends on your stage, your symptoms and what you can comfortably wear, so ask your doctor or lymphedema therapist. Supacore lipedema leggings deliver graduated compression of 25+ mmHg, as stated on the product page.

Can I wear compression leggings all day with lipedema?

Many women do. Seamless, breathable leggings are easier to wear for long days at work or on your feet. If you notice numbness, tingling, skin changes or pain that gets worse, take them off and speak to your clinician.

Is lipedema the same as lipoedema?

Yes. Lipedema is the American spelling and lipoedema is the Australian and British spelling of the same condition.

Do I need flat-knit garments, or can circular-knit leggings help?

Flat-knit garments are firmer and are often prescribed for later stages or when lymphedema is also present. Circular-knit, seamless leggings like Supacore's are smoother and are often used in earlier stages, for everyday wear and for exercise. Your therapist can tell you which suits you.

How do I choose my size?

Supacore leggings are sized by height and weight, not your usual clothing size. Use the women's size guide and, if you are between sizes, choose the smaller size.

Are Supacore lipedema leggings a medical device?

Yes. Supacore's CORETECH® garments are registered with the TGA, Australia's medical device regulator.

How do I care for lipedema compression leggings?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, and line dry in the shade. Do not bleach, tumble dry, iron or use fabric softener.

When should I take compression leggings off for lipedema?

Many women remove them in the evening and sleep without them unless a clinician advises otherwise. Take them off sooner if you notice numbness, tingling, skin changes or pain that gets worse while wearing them.

Should I size up or size down for lipedema compression?

Supacore leggings are sized by height and weight, not your usual clothing size. If you are between sizes, size down and choose the smaller size for firm support.

More lipedema questions, answered

These are questions women often ask when they first look into compression for lipedema (lipoedema). They are general information, not medical advice.

What type of compression leggings are best for lipedema?

Look for leggings that reach from the waist to the ankle, state a compression level in mmHg, and use graduated compression that is firmest at the ankle. For earlier stages and everyday wear, many women find seamless circular-knit leggings easier on tender skin. Flat-knit garments are often prescribed for later stages or when lymphedema is also present. Supacore lipedema compression leggings are seamless, circular-knit and 25+ mmHg, with zones over the abdomen, hips, thighs and legs.

Do compression leggings work for lipedema?

Compression does not remove lipedema fat. What it can do is make legs feel lighter and less achy, support tender tissue and make it easier to stay active. It works best as one part of a plan that can include movement, skin care and therapy, so talk to your doctor or lymphedema therapist about what suits your stage.

How should compression leggings fit if lipedema makes my legs tender?

They should feel firm and even, without bands that dig in at the waist, knees or ankles, and without rolling or bunching behind the knee. Snug is normal; sharp pain is not. Put them on in the morning when legs are least swollen, and size by height and weight using the women's size guide. If you are between sizes, size down. If they hurt, cause numbness or mark your skin, take them off and check with your clinician.

Are compression socks enough for lipedema?

Usually not on their own. Lipedema mainly affects the hips, thighs and lower legs, and the feet are usually spared, so knee-high socks leave most of the affected area uncovered. Waist-to-ankle leggings cover the hips and thighs too. If you also have swelling in your feet, your clinician may suggest socks or a foot piece alongside your leggings.

Do you make plus-size lipedema leggings?

Supacore lipedema leggings come in sizes XS to XXXL. They are sized by height and weight rather than dress size, so check the size chart on the product page. If you are unsure, call us on +61 468 072 885 and we can help you choose.

Can I exercise in lipedema compression leggings?

Yes. Many women wear them for walking, cycling, the gym and Pilates, and staying active is an important part of looking after yourself with lipedema. Seamless circular-knit leggings move with you and are breathable, and the CORETECH® waistband adds pelvic and lower-back support. Ask your clinician which activities suit you.

Are lymphatic drainage leggings the same as lipedema compression leggings?

Not always. Some leggings sold for lymphatic support do not state a compression level. For lipedema, look for a stated level in mmHg and graduated pressure from the ankle up. Compression leggings are also not a replacement for manual lymphatic drainage, which is a hands-on therapy from a trained therapist; many women use both. Supacore lipedema leggings are 25+ mmHg and registered with the TGA.
