Supacore compression leggings for lipedema

Best compression leggings for lipedema: what to look for

Lipedema (spelt lipoedema in Australia and the UK) is a chronic condition in which fat builds up symmetrically in the legs and hips, and sometimes the arms, while the feet and hands are usually spared. The tissue is often tender, bruises easily and feels heavy by the end of the day. It almost always affects women.

Compression is one of the main tools women use to manage how lipedema feels day to day. But "compression leggings" covers everything from gym tights to prescription garments. This guide explains what to look for so you can compare options with confidence. It is general information, not medical advice, so please work with your doctor or lymphedema therapist on your own plan.

What can compression leggings do for lipedema?

Compression does not remove lipedema fat. What many women find is that firm, graduated compression makes their legs feel lighter and less achy, supports tender tissue, and makes it easier to stay active, which is an important part of looking after yourself with lipedema. Compression usually sits alongside other care such as movement, skin care and therapy.

What should I look for in compression leggings for lipedema?

1. Coverage where lipedema actually is

Lipedema typically affects the hips, thighs and lower legs, and sometimes the tummy. Knee-high socks or calf sleeves leave most of that untouched. Look for leggings that compress from the waist down to the ankle, with zones over the hips, thighs and abdomen as well as the calves.

2. Graduated, medical-grade compression

Compression is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Everyday activewear rarely states a level. Graduated compression is firmest at the ankle and eases off up the leg. Supacore lipedema leggings deliver graduated compression of 25+ mmHg, as stated on the product page. Your clinician can tell you whether that level suits your stage.

3. A seamless knit that is kind to tender skin

Lipedema tissue can be painful to touch. Seams and stiff edges can dig in, especially over the knees and hips. Seamless, circular-knit leggings are smoother against the skin and easier to wear for long days.

4. A waistband that stays put

A waistband that rolls down stops compressing the tummy and hips and can create a tight band where you least want one. Supacore leggings use the patented CORETECH® waistband, which also gives pelvic and lower-back support. Extra-high waisted styles such as Meryl add more coverage over the abdomen.

5. Medical device status

Supacore's CORETECH® garments are registered with the TGA, Australia's medical device regulator. That tells you the garment is made and described as a medical compression product, not just activewear.

6. A fit you can wear all day

The most effective leggings are the ones you actually wear. Think about breathability, colour, length (full length or 7/8) and whether you want a pocket.

Flat-knit or circular-knit compression?

You will often see flat-knit garments recommended for lipedema. Flat-knit fabric is firmer and is commonly prescribed for later stages or when lymphedema is also present. Circular-knit garments, like Supacore's, are seamless and smoother. They are often used in earlier stages, for everyday wear and for exercise. Neither is "better" for everyone. Your lymphedema therapist can advise which suits your stage and how you live.

Can I wear compression leggings all day?

Many women wear their leggings through the working day and while exercising. Put them on in the morning, when legs are usually least swollen. If you notice numbness, tingling, skin changes, or pain that gets worse while wearing them, take them off and speak to your clinician.

Which Supacore leggings suit lipedema?

See the full lipedema compression collection. Many women with lipedema also live with POTS or hypermobility; if that is you, our POTS collection may also help.

How do I get the right size?

Supacore leggings are sized by height and weight, not your usual clothing size. Use the women's size guide, and if you are between sizes, choose the smaller size. Firm leggings take a little technique: sit down, gather each leg like a stocking, roll it up from the foot, and ease the waistband up last.

Frequently asked questions

What compression level do I need for lipedema leggings?

There is no single right level. It depends on your stage, your symptoms and what you can comfortably wear, so ask your doctor or lymphedema therapist. Supacore lipedema leggings deliver graduated compression of 25+ mmHg, as stated on the product page.

Can I wear compression leggings all day with lipedema?

Many women do. Seamless, breathable leggings are easier to wear for long days at work or on your feet. If you notice numbness, tingling, skin changes or pain that gets worse, take them off and speak to your clinician.

Is lipedema the same as lipoedema?

Yes. Lipedema is the American spelling and lipoedema is the Australian and British spelling of the same condition.

Do I need flat-knit garments, or can circular-knit leggings help?

Flat-knit garments are firmer and are often prescribed for later stages or when lymphedema is also present. Circular-knit, seamless leggings like Supacore's are smoother and are often used in earlier stages, for everyday wear and for exercise. Your therapist can tell you which suits you.

How do I choose my size?

Supacore leggings are sized by height and weight, not your usual clothing size. Use the women's size guide and, if you are between sizes, choose the smaller size.

Are Supacore lipedema leggings a medical device?

Yes. Supacore's CORETECH® garments are registered with the TGA, Australia's medical device regulator.
