HOW SUPACORE IS CONTRIBUTING TO THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Agenda for Sustainable Development

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity. The agenda aims to create a better and more sustainable future for all and is a “universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030”. (#Envision2030 Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production | United Nations Enable, 2020)

The agenda is a fifteen-year plan which was set out by the United Nations in 2015. The Agenda for Sustainable Development is an agreement that was accepted by all UN member states to work together towards creating a better world to live in. The agenda includes 17 sustainable and development goals (SDG) and goal number twelve of the agenda for sustainable development is Responsible Consumption and Production. This SDG aims to improve sustainable consumption and production patterns globally. Some of the targets of goal twelve are to:

  • Encourage companies, especially large and transnational corporations, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle

and

  • By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse process.

Supacore and Sustainable Manufacturing

Supacore is committed to cutting down on production waste through our seamless knitted technology production process. The Supacore range is manufactured by using seamless knitting technology, which is a sustainable method of producing and manufacturing our compression clothing. This sustainable method of manufacturing ensures garments are made to exact specifications and minimizes additional fabric going to waste. Essentially this method of manufacturing is cutting down on production waste as the seamless technology process does not leave behind any fabric. The technology allows for our garments to be produced in one piece without the need to cut and sew. If a pair of tights were produced using the traditional cut and sew technique, this would produce approximately 125g of cut off fabric which would go to waste. A larger production cycle of 1000 tights would create 125kg of offcut waste. This seamless knitting technology is a form of producing and manufacturing clothing that prevents as well as reduces waste in the garment making process. The seamless knitting production process also requires less energy consumption making it a more sustainable method of manufacturing.

Although this is a sustainable method of producing for Supacore, it also the most

beneficial production process for the quality of our compression clothing. The seamlessly knitted body-mapping compression in our patent CORETCH™ range is used to focus support on major muscle groups, resulting in less muscle soreness and soft tissue damage. This cutting-edge technology allows the production process to fine-tune the compression of each area to suit the muscles of the body. The seamless technology offers a better fit and comfortability in our clothing, allowing for better movement and enhancing your overall performance. The longevity of seamless knitting ensures you get more wear out of your Supacore range.

Supacore products are specifically designed to expand the lifespan of our clothing range. Seamless knitting is a sustainable alternative to producing sports apparel. The seamless production method produces a long-lasting outcome as the garment has not gone through the traditional cut and sew process. Seamless production reduces the chances of tearing at the seams as the garment is produced as one. This improves durability and the overall lifetime of the fabrication. Ultimately, the Supacore range is long-lasting and made through sustainable manufacturing.

Traditional Cut and Sew Production Method

The traditional cut and sew method in apparel manufacturing is often a contributing factor to the endless wastage of fabrics globally. Approximately 15 percent of textiles intended for garments end up on the cutting room floor. This conventional pattern cutting and manufacturing process require fabric pieces to be cut and sewn together. Often the specification is not completely accurate resulting in an uncontrollable cut-and-sew wastage problem for the industry. The offcuts leftover from the cut and sew garment production are frequently disposed of. Pre-consumer waste has serious environmental impacts on the globe and is one of many reasons why the Agenda for Sustainable Development is important to bring about change in the way many industries manufacture their products.
